    This publication is a report of Topic 1.2 of the 5th World Water Forum in Istanbul, Turkey (17-18 March 2009), which was jointly organized by UNU-EHS, the GAP Administration and UNW-DPC and which contributed to developing a better understanding of the process of rural to rural, rural to urban and cross-border migration in the face of water scarcity.

  • Just Published: Education for Water Sustainability: Where Decades Meet (Knowledge No. 2)

    This publication covers the main outcomes of the workshop on Education for Water Sustainability: Where Decades Meet (Workshop 1 of the UNESCO World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development, Bonn, Germany 31 March – 2 April 2009), which was UNW-DPC, UNESCO-IHP and the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU). The main outcomes of the workshop include suggestions for the way forward which were based on the work developed during the UNESCO Regional Workshops on Water Education and at the 5th World Water Forum.

  • Just Published: Gender-disaggregated Data on Water and Sanitation (Knowledge No. 1)

    This is the first publication in the Knowledge Publication Series and is a follow-up of the Expert Meeting Group on Gender-disaggregated Data on Water and Sanitation (United Nations Headquarters New York, USA, 2-3 December 2008), jointly organized by UNW-DPC and UN DESA. With this publication UNW-DPC and UN DESA hope to serve policy makers, experts and water managers involved in monitoring and planning water and sanitation programmes and policies regarding flexible and gender-sensitive strategies for sustainable access to and use of water and sanitation.

  • Joint Publication on Capacity Development for Improved Water Management

    UNW-DPC and UNESCO-IHE have compiled a joint publication “Capacity Development for Improved Water Management”, representing the state of the art in capacity development in the water sector. A special pre-print of a book, to be published by Taylor and Francis in April, will be distributed for the first time at the 5th World Water Forum. The publication contains 16 chapters from experts within and outside the UN-Water mechanism and will focus on providing a state of the art account of capacity development issues, tools and instruments, and important areas of application. To date, contributing authors come from organizations including UNESCO-IHE, Worldbank, OECD, UNW-DPC, UNU-INWEH, Asian Development Bank (ADB), National Water and Sewage Corporation of Uganda (NWSC), project WET (Water Education for Teachers), the Office International de l’Eau, Alterra and the Universities of Osnabrück, Waterloo and Toronto, and many others.

  • UNW-DPC Publication on Institutional Capacity Development in Transboundary Water Management

    To provide detailed information to go alongside the Third World Water Development Report (WWDR3), a number of official WWDR3 Side Publications will be presented to the public by WWAP. One of these will be the UNW-DPC Side Publication, entitled "Institutional Capacity Development in Transboundary Water Management". This publication, inspired by the results of the UNW-DPC/UNESCO-IHP International Workshop on "Institutional Capacity Development in Transboundary Basins" identifies different, successful institutional mechanisms (related to cooperation, legal and policy frameworks and funding) that support joint decision making, monitoring and data sharing in transboundary waters around the world. It also discusses suggested capacity development activities that can potentially lead to the development and strengthening of these mechanisms in other basins.

    The publication “Water-Related Capacity Development: A survey of UN-Water members’ and partners’ activities” presents the outcomes of a survey UNW-DPC conducted among UN-Water members and partners and the results of the analysis. The objective of the survey was to provide a snapshot overview of ongoing capacity development activities implemented by UN-Water members and partners as well as to identify their future plans and requirements for support and suggestions for capacity development focus within the UN-Water mechanism.

    UNW-DPC is happy to present the proceedings of the International Workshop on “Institutional Capacity Development in Transboundary Basins: Lessons learned from practical experience”, which was held in the BMZ, Bonn on 10-12 November 2008. The workshop was co-organized by UNW-DPC and the UNESCO International Hydrological Programme (UNESCO-IHP).

  • Annual Report 2007-2008 (Reporting No. 2)

    UNW-DPC is pleased to publish its Annual Report for the period 2007-2008, which provides a comprehensive summary of the main achievements of UNW-DPC since its establishment. The Annual Report focuses on the outcomes that have contributed to increasing the capacity of the many different types of beneficiaries of UNW-DPC activities and that have strenghtened the cooperation beween UNW-DPC and its partners. The activities developed in the last 17 months cover different aspects of water-related capacity development.
