UNW-DPC and FAO, in partnership with the Ministry of Energy of Iran (Deputy for Water and Wastewater Affairs) are cooperating in the organization of a regional workshop on "Capacity Development for Farm Management Strategies to Improve Crop-Water Productivity using AquaCrop" on 9-13 August 2009 in Tehran, Iran, while introducing a new model called AquaCrop. AquaCrop is the FAO tool to estimate yield response to water.

In the years to come, it is expected that the agricultural sector will compete with households and industry for scarce water resources, and yet it is under pressure to produce more with less water to satisfy the food needs of a growing world population. As such, agriculture needs to improve its water productivity, and models are a tool to assess accurately crop yield under limited water availability.
Until the end of 2009, several regional AquaCrop workshops are planned around the world. The first workshop will take place in Nanjing, China (15-19 June 2009), the second on Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso (27-31 July 2009). The workshops’ purpose is to train participants from various regions in Africa and Asia in the practical applications of AquaCrop in order to improve their skills in strategic management aimed at increasing crop-water productivity in rainfed and irrigated production systems.
