Workshop on Improving Agricultural Productivity, Water Use Efficiency and Rural Livelihoods
UNW-DPC and UN DESA are jointly organizing a Capacity Development Workshop on Improving Agricultural Productivity, Water Use Efficiency and Rural Livelihoods to take place at the UN ESCAP premises in Bangkok, Thailand on 28-30 January 2009. UN ESCAP has kinldy offered to provide local support to this event.
The overall objective of the workshop is to strengthen technical and institutional capacities of key government institutions and policy makers in developing and implementing sustainable agricultural, rural development and irrigation water management policies with specific thrust on rural poverty reduction. Analysis and sharing of past experiences against the background of challenges facing the agriculture, water and rural development will allow the policy-makers to have a better understanding of the policy interventions and actions needed to address the challenge of reducing rural poverty.
The workshop will help the national policy makers acquire first-hand knowledge about sustainable agricultural, water management and rural development practices through sharing of experiences with their counterparts from other countries, international experts and grass root-level rural development managers and practitioners. By the end of the three days workshop, the participants from developing countries will have an enhanced awareness about:

By the end of the three days workshop, the participants from developing countries will have an enhanced awareness about:
- concrete policy measures to improve agricultural production, water management and rural development;
- successful technologies for sustainable land and water management practices as well as for natural resources management;
- capacity gaps in agriculture and rural development including water management, and ways to bridge these gaps; and
- nature and scope on non-farm interventions that are vital to reduce rural poverty
These outcomes will serve as important inputs to the deliberations of the 17th session of the CSD in 2009 and possible regional follow-up activities.
