UNW-DPC and UN-HABITAT Training Programmes at World Urban Forum 4
UNW-DPC and UN-HABITAT are jointly organizing the "International Training Programme for Mayors on Urban Water and Sanitation" (1-2 November 2008) and the training event on "Urban Water Conservation and Demand Management for Utilities and All Other Stakeholders" (4 November 2008) at the World Urban Forum 4 in Nanjing, China (3-7 November 2008).
Event One:
International Training Programme for Mayors on Urban Water and Sanitation, 1-2 November
UNW-DPC and UN-HABITAT are jointly organizing an International Training Programme for Mayors on Urban Water and Sanitation on 1-2 November as a pre-event to the World Urban Forum 4 taking place in Najing, PR China from 3 to 7 November 2008. This training programme is co-organized with the National Training Center for Mayors of China. The training programme for Mayors and Chief Executives will focus on strengthening the knowledge and capacity development for urban water and sanitation management and finding out better approaches for cities to meet the MDG on water and sanitation.
About 60 Mayors and Chief Executives are expected to participate, representing cities of the following countries:
• Cambodia
• India
• Indonesia
• Nepal
• Lao PDR
• Pakistan
• Vietnam
• Kenya
• Tanzania
• Uganda
• Bolivia
• Colombia
The programme will invite several international and national experts, high officials and university professors as resource persons to share their knowledge and experiences related to advanced technology on water and sanitation and will also discuss technical, financial, institutional, economic and social issues. The programme will be highly practical and include field visits to enable the participants to understand different approaches adopted by PR China in the water and sanitation sector management.

Event Two:
Training Event on Urban Water Conservation and Demand Management for Utilities and all other Stakeholders, 4 November
As part of the programme of the World Urban Forum 4 in Najing, UNW-DPC and UN-HABITAT are jointly organizing a Training Event on Urban Water Conservation and Demand Management for Utilities and all other Stakeholders on 4 November (From 9:00am to 12:00 in Room: MR 203 of the Nanjing International Expo Centre).
In the training event the principles and concepts of Water Conservation and Demand Management (WCDM) will be explained and good practices and case studies in the Asian region will be presented. One of the objectives of this training event is to promote capacity development among water managers and decision makers to strengthen their ability to deal with urban water conservation and demand management. Participants will learn various demand management tools such as installation of water meters, application of differential tariff rates, and promotion of water efficient technologies and generation of awareness about prudent use of water.
The issues covered in the event will include:
• Technical aspects of unaccounted-for water
• Financial and administrative aspects of unaccounted-for water
• Public awareness and legislative measures
• Drinking water loss reduction
• Best practices on water demand management in Asian cities
