UNW-DPC and UNU-INWEH Organize Jointly a Learning Centre on Integrated Water Resources Management

UNW-DPC and the UNU-INWEH are jointly organizing a learning centre at the 16th session of the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD-16) at the UN Headquarters in New York City, USA in May 2008 to contribute to UN Millennium Development Goals. The objectives of the learning centre are to provide the participants with the necessary knowledge and skills to understand the concepts of IWRM (integrated water resources management) and to familiarize them with the application of IWRM in drylands using StudySpace software.
The UN Millennium Development Goals and the World Summit on Sustainable Development pledged to halve the number of people without access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation by 2015. To achieve these targets, an additional 1.5 billion people will require improved access to water supply, which means providing groundwork service for 100 million people each year between 2000 and 2015.
Clearly, an enormous number of water personnel must be trained urgently to design, construct, manage and operate all of the water systems that will be required to meet this global challenge. To achieve these targets current generations of professionals need to be trained on the framework of IWRM . One of the most effective ways to assist the current generation of managers, scientists and policy makers to improve water management practices is to focus on adult education.
